short term spending cuts should be part of any fiscal cliff deal. the big news this morning is we're not going over the cliff. they have a bad hand. they're going to end up passing this middle class tax thing if that's the only thing they do. and live to fight another day. you can see the momentum building. not official but you see it. the difficulty for boehner still is passing the extension may be best of the options it is an option that a chunk of his party has said he would reject. the fiscal conservatives criticizing boehner's budget pr proposal. then you had senate republicans watching their backs, rejecting a u.n. treaty that bans discrimination against those with disabilities around the world. senator jim demint said speaker boehner's $800 billion tax hike will destroy american jobs. yes, he said speaker boehner. one party proposes increase in an effort to counter them. the other party's leadership proposes, wait for it, $800 billion in tax increases and then former alaska governor sarah palin blasting boehner's decision to remove some conse

why aren't you for going over the fiscal cliff? i heard you yesterday saying it would be catastrophic, but let me read you estimates. we go over the cliff, we suddenly have -- we're basically taking in as much money as we're spending over a five-year period. yes, the economy is in bad shape in 2013 but by 2018 we'd have a debt to gdp ratio of 1.1%. isn't this simpson-bowles on steroids? >> you know, it's no different than what happened over in the uk, in my opinion. they had a similar proposal to what we proposed with dollar revenue and $3 worth of spending cuts. they had a cost benefit analysis they did on all the spending programs, they raised the retirement age. they slowed the rate of growth of health care and they tried to get to balance in four or five years. and we thought at the time the debt was too much too quick that amount of austerity would really, you know, lead to a recession. that's why we had as our number one priority in our program that we didn't want to do anything to disrupt a very fragile economic recovery, so

the only reason we can't saturday fiscal cliff negotiations have fallen apart is that the two sides are still talking. but things are bad, make no mistake. and neither side is optimistic that anything can get done at all. with congress and the president careening to the edge of the cliff, the public is ignoring party lines and demanding an end to this mess. 70% of democrats, 59% of republicans want their own party's leaders to come to an agreement, even if it means not sticking to long-held positions on taxes and entitlements and yet despite those demand, the country is evenly divided on whether they think a consensus can be worked out here in washington, whether they believe obama and boehner can strike a deal. interestingly folks that are paying more attention to the fiscal cliff story are more pessimistic. it's the folks paying less attention that are more optimistic. judging by what we're hearing from negotiators, the public clearly knows something is up in the bad way. >> i remain the most optimistic person in this town but we've got some serious differences. the longer the white h

fiscal cliff. mike, i want to start with you. it does seem as if there are three groups of republican thought, right? you have the conservatives saying, you know, don't relent on this. upset jim demint was critical of john boehner the day before he left the senate saying i can't believe you agreed 0 to any tax relief, where the house is trying to configure something that keeps them safe and then you have the governors. you've had others. christie thinks the same thing, this is ridiculous. don't do this to the republican party brand. just cut this deal. don't be so stubborn on these high-end tax rates. is that the way you see it? >> i think the elections have cons 0 againsts and the electorate has chosen divided government. they expect compromise and expect it from both sides. i don't think republicans should move on tax increases without significant movement on entitlements. >> you want to get something in return but go ahead and offer it. and right now they're not offering it. >> in order to get something done, people expect to
